Increase in Canadian Doctors Does Not Mean Surplus in K-W

As usual, a "conveneint " study says we have an increased number of doctors in Canada. This will reduce the public's push for licensing the many foreign trained doctors on our shores.

The truth is that there are is still a very long wait time, some surgeries are not being done and as the report below suggest, not enough family doctors.

A new report shows the number of doctors in Canada has increased three times faster than the population.

However, that does not mean there is a surplus of physicians in Kitchener-Waterloo.

In fact, over 20,000 K-W residents still do not have a family doctor.

Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Ian McLean tells 570's Gary Doyle Show, even though there are a lot of doctors training at local schools, they are being recruited by other communities as well.

He says the local students even hear from cities outside of Canada.

McLean adds, with limited doctors available here, that means more pressure is on urgent care clinics and emergency rooms.

He says recruitment weekends are a good way to not only sell prospective physicians on the health care facilities, but also the whole community.

He says they have also increased efforts to lure foreign trained doctors to the area.
